Prayagraj  | UP Anti Conversion Act News | The Allahabad High Court has sought a response from the state government in four weeks on a petition challenging the Conversion (Conversion) Act (Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Prohibition Ordinance-2020) brought in Uttar Pradesh to prevent love jihad by changing identity.

The petition has been directed to be presented in the second week of August for hearing after receiving the replies of both the parties. Along with this, the Allahabad High Court has dismissed six petitions filed against the conversion ordinance as meaningless as they become law. However, the petitioners have been given the liberty to file a petition challenging the validity of the Act afresh.

This order has been given by a division bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav and Justice Siddharth Verma. State’s Additional Advocate General Manish Goel represented the government and sought time to file a reply on the petition challenging the validity of the law. The conversion law has been challenged through a petition filed by the Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiative.

In the petition, stating that the conversion law is contrary to the Constitution, it has been said that this law has been made only to take political advantage. It was also said that this can also lead to oppression of a particular class of people. The petitions have also raised apprehensions of misuse of the conversion law.

As per Dainik Jagran Reports the Allahabad High Court said that the Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Prohibition Ordinance has now become a law. Therefore, there is no justification for hearing the pending petitions in this regard. The court has also rejected the demand to challenge the law by filing amendments in six petitions challenging the conversion ordinance, as the ordinance has been replaced with an act.
